Motion Sensor LED Lights for Miami University's Psychology Building |
Miami University - Psychology BuildingCurrently, in about every building on Miami University’s campus, there are lights on constantly in the hallways and/or classrooms. These lights may stay on all day long until the building closes at night or even afterwards. This is an especially be said for the Psychology Building, specifically on the second and third floor where there is less foot traffic, therefore having these lights on consistently is unnecessary. I suggest that Miami University implements motion sensor LED lights in all hallways and classrooms in the Psychology Building.

The motion sensor LED lights would conserve energy, therefore lessening the Carbon Footprint the Psychology Building leaves and the one Miami University leaves too. Furthermore, the motion sensor LED lights would decrease the electricity bills for the Psychology building. In the future, if Miami University were to implement these motion sensor LED lights in other buildings on campus it would produce the aforementioned benefits on a larger scale.

. In the past five years, the Psychology Building had their lights switched from ‘2x4’ light fixtures to LED lights which in itself was a beneficial change for energy conservation and a slight change cost efficiency. The cost in electricity for the Psychology Building, depending on the month, has changed from $0 to almost $10,000, which is roughly a 1-2% change in the cost difference. By implementing the LED lights, the watts went from 27 to 15, but by switching to the motion sensor LED lights while running they would use 5 watts and 1 watts while idling.
